An Audience with Lady Mary Peters
In the 1972 Summer Olympics Lady Mary Peters won the gold medal in the women's pentathlon. She represented Northern Ireland at every Commonwealth Games between 1958 and 1974 and won 2 gold medals for the pentathlon, plus a gold and silver medal for the shot put.
Tonight we celebrate the remarkable work of the Mary Peters Trust which encourages our young people to realise their sporting dreams.
Mary will talk about her role in putting sport firmly on the educational map. No one in Northern Ireland has made a greater contribution to ensure that our young people have access to top facilities, leading experts and the necessary financial support.
We will also discuss Lady Mary Peters support for young people with disabilities who are determined to excel in their chosen sport.
Mary will also talk about her background, her training as a teacher and her experience of the classroom as well as revealing who motivated, encouraged and coached her at the start of her career.
