The USSR had a distinctive history that continues to influence today’s Russia such as the tradition autocracy. The Role of the State has always been extensive in both pre- and post-revolutionary Russia. The course looks at the Russian land and the people of the Soviet Union; ideology of the Communist Party, Soviet society, dissent and opposition; the Soviet political system, economy, industrialisation and collectivisation; women and families; alcohol as a social problem; Orthodox faith; and social and political changes since Stalin.
